Ruby Shoesday
Ruby Shoesday
A chance meeting with Heidi and a short demonstration of state-of-the-art LEDs later and LEDfantastic had its first 'proper' shop job. Ruby Shoesday is in the middle of Hebden Bridge and sells hand-made top- quality shoes. Before we came along they were burning over 2kw of lights... now they are twice as bright but only use 600w - an energy saving of over 70%. We calculated that Ruby Shoesday will pay back the cost of the installation in less than two years... and we expect the lights to last at least seven years without needing any replacements.

The Roundhouse
The Roundhouse
Our friends Steve & Caryn have some land in Northern Portugal, where, every Easter, they host the Portuguese Green Gathering (Encontre Verde). Their round house is 14m across and is used as a meeting and workshop space. It needed both bright and subdued lighting. Warm, welcoming colour was also important. We used wide-angle 12v SMD lights for warm white working light with a ring of 8mm super-brights around the centre wheel and eight red, yellow & green tentacle clusters around the walls for the gentle lighting.

Festive Workshop
Festive Workshop
We met Martin at Glastonbury Festival in 2009. Last autumn he got in touch wanting us to go down to Shepton Mallet to run a series of workshops over consecutive weekends in December, culminating in a torchlit procession. In principle this is exactly what we like to do, but in fact I was already heading to Inverness at the start of December, and, as the weather turned out, travel in December was a bit of a nightmare all round. Luckily we had the brainwave of making up some special kits and writing some special instructions so that Martin & his crew could deliver our workshop themselves...
'... the kits arrived safely; wow, you have done a fantastic job!I was not expecting it all to be so beautifully presented: wire ends bared, kits labelled with lamp colours and with beautiful laminated instructions too! Great, thank you so very much...' Martin

Weirdigans
Weirdigans
Seven years ago I joined Em in her new venture, Weirdigans (travelling) Organic Cafe. It was welcoming and cosy in the daytime, but at night was a deep, dark hole.
Sometimes we'd pay an extortionate price for an electric hook-up and use a 400w string of coloured lights, but mostly there'd be candles, lanterns and gloom...
Enough of this, said I, can I have the money we'd spend on a hook-up to invest in these new things I've come across instead? The rest is history...Jump to today... we usually tour with a tent for acoustic music performance, one for customers to chill out in and a kitchen tent for, well, cooking in.... In the dark of night, with the music playing loud enough to be heard above the din, the kitchen ablaze with work lights, we use less than 60 watts... we're powered by a small solar array and 400 amp hours of battery capacity...

Stall Lights
Stall Lights
Kate produces beautiful jewellery and wanted some low-energy lights to show off her wares at festivals. We sorted out the lights and also some pretty nifty 12v lithium-ion batteries that means her whole lighting rig weighs less than 3kg and fits in a small bag...
Meanwhile Pete has a clothes stall and wanted some spotlights and a lighting rig to run from his van battery. Here's a selection of pictures to show the quality of the finished lights and wiring. They also giving some idea of the light you can expect from such set-ups.
Kate uses 10mm H-power LEDs on 'tentacles' and single 48 SMD MR16s flexible spotlights, while Pete wanted double 48 LED flexible spotlights...

Al Fresco Dining
Al Fresco Dining
As well as the Encontre Verde, Steve & Caryn host other events & courses at Quinta Cabeça do Mato. Outdoor dining is possible in Portugal for most of the year, so their wood-frame shelter gets a lot of use, even when the nights are drawing in.
We fitted tentacle clusters all around the outside and pendant 48 LED spots to light the tables.
As with the roundhouse, the effect was both functional and beautiful.

Golly's Pots
Golly's Pots
We've been to Croissant Neuf twice now and both times we were pitched near to Golly and his Raku pottery in the 'Craft's' area. Golly liked our lights so much he lost the first set and had to have a second set made up on-site when we met him for the second time.
We made up two double-headed flexible spotlights and fitted them with wide angle SMD lights. Plenty of light to see his wares and work by... 12v powered by cigar-lighter socket straight from his van.

Pete's Party
Pete's Party
At the end of last year's festival season we took the Weirdigans crew on holiday... to a festival. MACfest is a tiny-but-perfectly-formed festival held in Ravenstonedale, in north-east Cumbria.
As we are terrible workaholics we managed to help with the set-up and the take-down, as well as decorating Pete's barn with LEDs for the after-party.

Tree Sculptures
Tree Sculptures
In 2010 we returned to the Croissant Neuf Summer Party in the Welsh Borders. This is regularly awarded the 'Greenest' festival award, and rightly so. No generators, just solar & wind power. Local produce and real beer. So relaxed its almost horizontal. Possibly my favourite festival for LEDfantastic to run our workshops - less than 1000 people but it seems every one of them comes along & takes part.
So, ten minutes before we're about to open, one of the organisers sheepishly approaches with the rusted remains of two 'flower' lights that are meant to be illuminating the forest glade on the hill fort (told you it was a special festival...). Can we fix it? Yes we can! We rebuild the lights in record time... brighter, more beautiful and vastly more energy-efficient.
Suffice to say we'll be building them some more this summer....

Light Boxes
Light Boxes
Inspired by a friend's beautiful lampshades (Hannah Nunn) I designed a simple light box so she could mount her designs flush to the wall. The light box is 20mm deep but could reduce to 10mm if the design was A4 size. After a little more experimentation we have found we can transfer any printed or digital design to A4 format. The coloured design below uses colour-change LEDs and is remote controlled. If you are interested get in touch - we can produce frames to your specification.
